Moving to Mars: no it’s not a sci-fi domestic drama, but a feature-length documentary that I Edit Assistanted many months ago.
Two families take a remarkable journey in this documentary by Mat Whitecross (co-director of The Road to Guantanamo), which follows a group of Burmese refugees travelling from temporary camps in Thailand to their new home in Sheffield.
The ICA have kindly granted it a two week cinema run before it eventually arrives at More4. I think this is a fascinating and moving film, and it recieved a similarly positive reception at DocFest. There’s a Q&A screening with the director on the 22nd of January, which I will be attending, and I hope you might be able to come along as well.
Since releasing my Olly The Octopus video, the ever-verbal YouTube community has given it a hearty reception. And now it’s nice to see the charity single released on ITunes, complete with my illustrated album art! Very official.

The video is for his Charity Christmas Single, “A Call To Arms For Hippies”. It’s lo-fi like a blow fly, but hopefully rather charming. Let me know what you think!
Before Arcadia first premiered, I managed to set aside just enough time to produce this quick little Making Of featurette, to screen alongside it. Since then, people could only catch it on the rare DVD copies- until now!
As the film was produced on a £20 note and spare time, I hope you might be interested to see how we did it. It’s a very brisk tour but covers most of the stages, and is full of interesting production shots.
Spoiler warning: If you haven’t seen all of Arcadia yet, this little doc might spoil some things. And it probably wouldn’t make much sense anyway.
Just a quick note on Internet Story: more delay I’m afraid. We’re now hoping for a December premiere in London.
Ok, a few notes on this. I was the Production Designer and Animator on this Music Video, not the director. Online release was very slow so it’s also a little old now, but as a low budget one continuous shot video, I still think it’s pretty cool. Credits and other details here.
Last week, I was pleased to learn that Breast Cancer UK won the award for “Best Communicated Message” at the recent Liberal Democrat Conference.
As they had been playing my commissioned promo throughout the event, and received a lot of positive attention over it, I can’t really help but take some of the credit. Well done to the whole team!
Several months ago, I was commissioned to produce an animated promo for the charity Breast Cancer UK. The trustees have been really happy with it and are currently touring it around various political conferences. It’s fun and informative, so you might like to check it out above! Full details here.
In other news, my thanks to those who attended probably the last public screening of Arcadia at the Portobello Film Festival. Thanks for laughing/semi-gasping at the right bits! There were also loads of neat films in the programme, so it was a great fest to be part of.
Thought some of you would care to know about my game creation hobby and how my projects are progressing in this field. It certainly informs my interest in geek-culture, interactivity and pixel art/animation.

The Portobello Film Festival, London’s hippest and trendiest film event, is showcasing Arcadia! It will be showing on the 7th of September, from around 8pm. I really recommend coming to see the whole programme (from 6pm), as it’s sure to show a load of cool films, including Hip Hip Hooray by fellow director Lynsey Miller. It’s FREE entry and I’ll be there, so come and say “Hi!”
On a side note, I thought it was funny that Arcadia had been rated unsuitable for anyone below the age of 12. I’d always seen it as a film that a lot of kids might enjoy, even if it does have some scary, or at least unsettling, moments. I guess my childhood featured a lot more disturbing Czech stop-frame animations…
